Why Danes have a Potato Holiday...
Also known in Danish as 'Kartoffelferie', it basically means autumn break, for anyone who is a student or has kids in school. Why not call if for what it is, you might wonder?
Well, back in the day, the hard-working Danish farmer could not manage the fall potato harvest by himself. So the whole family, even the kids, took off school for that week to help along in the potato fields.
So, besides getting used to the week system Danmark has, as opposed to just calling 1st of October – for what it is - the first of October - Danes would say Week 39.
This year’s Kartoffelferie falls as regular in week 42.
